“The Good Doctor” is a New York comedy writer’s take on one Russia’s greatest writers, Anton Chekhov.
Most people would know Neil Simon from the Movie and the subsequent TV show The Odd Couple. With a fine eye for the ridiculous, Simon has a nice way of deflating pomposity. But he always does it with a genuine affection for his characters, even the most loathsome ones. That’s why his comedies have endured.
In “The Good Doctor”, Simon takes a bunch of Anton Chekhov short stories and ideas and retells them through a New Yorker’s eyes, but in an imperial Russian setting. The narrator of the play invites the audience to join him as he imagines the stories, which are played out in 12 short scenes, some funny and some bitter sweet to cover the whole range of human emotion from youth to old age. The bittersweet stories have the “Ahhh” factor working through them. The funny stories range from sublime word plays to ridiculous keystone cop physical comedy. There are even recipes for a full hearty meal fit for an officer and gentleman.
If you want a night of unbelievably pleasant surprises you must come and see “The Good Doctor”. You never know, he may even write you a prescription for a happier, or at least funnier, life.
